{"id":5509,"date":"2018-11-30T08:18:23","date_gmt":"2018-11-30T07:18:23","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.nutrisens.com\/vitalites\/nutrition-for-seniors-requirements-recommendations-and-useful-tips\/"},"modified":"2024-03-05T15:20:10","modified_gmt":"2024-03-05T14:20:10","slug":"nutrition-for-seniors-requirements-recommendations-and-useful-tips","status":"publish","type":"vitalites","link":"https:\/\/www.nutrisens.com\/en\/vitalites\/nutrition-for-seniors-requirements-recommendations-and-useful-tips\/","title":{"rendered":"Nutrition for seniors : requirements, recommendations and useful tips"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em>General guidelines apply to older people, but an increased risk of <\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nutrisens.com\/en\/malnutrition\/\"><strong><em><u>malnutrition<\/u><\/em><\/strong><\/a><em> and muscle wasting should be taken into account.<\/em><\/p>\n<p class=\"rtejustify\">A balanced diet is vital to well-being and health, particularly for elderly people who are more at risk of malnutrition, muscle wasting and related chronic diseases.\u00a0As shown by research undertaken in the endocrinology department of a French hospital and published in the journal <em>M\u00e9decine des maladies M\u00e9taboliques<\/em>, nutritional balance plays a role in life expectancy and independence.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\n<h2><strong>Heterogeneous population<\/strong><\/h2>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"rtejustify\">Elderly people can be divided into three categories: (1) those who <strong>have aged well<\/strong>, are independent and are well-nourished; (2)\u00a0the <strong>fragile, <\/strong>who suffer from nutritional imbalance and are under medication for several afflictions; (3) those who are dependent, suffer from <strong>several\u00a0illnesses<\/strong> and are often in residential care. Advice for the first group differs little from guidelines for the general population, subject to <strong>regular check-ups<\/strong>. For the second group, nutritional balance is key because medication puts them at risk of nutritional imbalance. The third group are at risk of falling, depression, muscle wasting and malnutrition and a balanced diet is <strong>a determining factor<\/strong> in their health and well-being.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\n<h2><strong>Extra needs<\/strong><\/h2>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"rtejustify\">Contrary to popular belief, older people require as much nourishment as younger generations. Exercise or metabolic imbalance, especially malnutrition, increases requirements. Account for eating habits, lifestyle, socio-economic context and pathologies.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\n<h2><strong>Everyday tips<\/strong><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"float: right; width: 254px; height: 145px;\" src=\"\/sites\/default\/files\/fotolia_190527627_xs_3.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/h2>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Eat at least three varied meals a day, of <strong>sufficient quantity<\/strong>, plus snacks if necessary. The evening meal should be sustaining. Avoid going more than 12 hours without eating. Eat several high-energy snacks per day rather than three traditional meals.<\/p>\n<p>&#8211; Is intake sufficient? <strong>Quality<\/strong> is important. Cater for tastes, encourage regular hydration without waiting to feel thirsty, do not forbid wine but restrict amount.<\/p>\n<p>&#8211; Help patients improve their diet: <strong>suggest snacks<\/strong> and menus and if necessary, set up home delivery.<\/p>\n<p>&#8211; Avoid instilling bad habits and inciting guilt (salt-free diet)<\/p>\n<p>&#8211; For diabetics: avoid simple carbohydrates for starters and between meals. Make sure mealtimes remained shared. Medication should be adapted to habits, not the other way around.<\/p>\n<p>&#8211; For anorexics or under-nourished patients, <strong>enrich meals<\/strong> with foodstuffs such as eggs and cheese, or dietary supplements, provided they do not replace meals.<\/p>\n<p><em>La nutrition des personnes \u00e2g\u00e9es.
