In elderly people, malnutrition is of the protein-energy type. Protein-energy malnutrition is a <strong>deficiency in proteins and energy<\/strong>, often coupled with a deficiency in vitamins and minerals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Key figures:<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>According to a 2007 French government health report, malnutrition affects:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>4\u201310% of elderly people who live at home<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>15\u201338% of elderly people living in institutions (retirement home etc.)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Up to 70% of hospitalised elderly peopleSeniors at a high risk of malnutrition<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Seniors at a high risk of malnutrition<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Three factors influence the degree of risk:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Several changes that come with age can lead to malnutrition if left unchecked. Loss of appetite can lead to undernourishment. This is often known as the anorexia of ageing.<br>&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Elderly patients tend to resist renutrition. A young adult will naturally make up for a period of restricted eating (e.g. hospital treatment). However, an elderly person tends not to compensate in the same way. It is therefore very important to take preventive action.<br>&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Changes in protein metabolism in the elderly lead to a loss of lean mass (muscle) and an increase in fat. Tec &amp; doc, 3e \u00e9dition, Paris 2011<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Causes of malnutrition<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Malnutrition can be:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Endogenous<\/strong>: energy requirements outweigh intake This happens when proteins, fat and carbohydrate are broken down excessively (hypercatabolism). This is a defence mechanism observed after illness and more generally following chronic or acute inflammation.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Exogenous<\/strong>: insufficient energy intake compared to metabolic requirements. In elderly people, many social, psychological and physiological factors influence food intake.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>There are also many preconceived ideas concerning an elderly person\u2019s dietary requirements.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Some believe that energy requirements decrease with age but in fact, energy intake should be at least equivalent to that of a young adult.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Consequences: the slippery slope towards malnutrition<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/sites\/default\/files\/undernutrition-spiral.jpg\" alt=\"\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>each stage.
